Arctic surfing at Unstad
Surf the Arctic waves at the world's northernmost surf school in Lofoten.
Photo: Unstad Arctic SurfSurfing came to Unstad in 1963, after some local guys went to sea and ended up in Australia. They came home inspired and made surfboards in woodwork class, using a Beach Boys record cover as their guide. What started as curiosity became something remarkable (the world's northernmost surf school, located at 68°N in the Lofoten Islands).
Unstad is now the most famous surf spot in Lofoten and arguably the best break in Norway. The sea here is 500 meters deep, and waves that might have started building up near Greenland arrive with nothing to break their momentum. It's a unique combination of cold water, dramatic scenery, and, if you time it right, northern lights dancing above the evening breakers.
When to surf
Seasons
November - March Biggest, most consistent waves. The autumn storms bring powerful swells. Experienced surfers come from around the world for these conditions.
Summer Smaller, gentler waves better suited for beginners. Families and first-timers often visit during this period.
The left-handed wave that arrives with autumn storms is considered among the best in the world. But you don't need to be a pro. Unstad Arctic Surf offers lessons year-round, and summer conditions are ideal for learning.
What to expect
Unstad Arctic Surf provides everything you need (qualified instructors, modern wetsuits, surfboards, indoor changing rooms, hot showers, and a sauna for warming up after your session). Beginner lessons start at around NOK 1,595 per person.
What makes surfing here different is the setting. Unlike crowded surf spots elsewhere, there's space. You're not competing for waves. The mountains rising from the sea, the Arctic light, and, in winter, the possibility of surfing under the northern lights creates an atmosphere that's completely different from any traditional surf destination.
