Frequently asked questions
Answers about booking, pickup, mileage, insurance and returning your rental car.
Booking and reservations
How can I book a rental car?
You can make a reservation through our website or contact us directly by email or telephone. When making a reservation, please provide:
- Full name and contact details.
- Pick-up and return dates and times.
- Preferred vehicle category.
- Pick-up and return locations.
- Number of passengers.
- Any additional requirements, such as child seats or additional drivers. A reservation is confirmed when you receive written confirmation from Narvik Rent a Car.
Is my reservation guaranteed?
A confirmed reservation guarantees the agreed vehicle category, subject to the booking conditions. We reserve the right to provide an equivalent or upgraded vehicle if circumstances require it. We will make reasonable efforts to provide the vehicle originally requested.
Can I change my reservation?
Yes. Contact us as soon as possible if you need to change your rental dates, times, vehicle category or pick-up location. Changes are subject to availability and may affect the rental price.
What happens if my flight or train is delayed?
Please inform us immediately if your flight, train or other transport is delayed. We understand that travel in Northern Norway can be affected by weather and transport disruptions. However, we cannot guarantee that staff will be available indefinitely without prior notification. If you arrive significantly later than agreed, we may need to arrange another pick-up solution.
What happens if I do not show up to collect the vehicle?
If you do not arrive at the agreed time and have not contacted us, we may consider the reservation a no-show. Any applicable cancellation or no-show charges will be determined by the reservation conditions.
Can I cancel my reservation?
Yes. Cancellation conditions depend on the booking type and applicable reservation agreement. For bookings subject to our published cancellation policy, cancellations made less than 48 hours before the rental period may result in the deposit being non-refundable. Please contact us before cancelling if your travel plans change.
Is a deposit required?
A deposit or payment guarantee may be required before the vehicle is released. The amount and payment method depend on the vehicle category, rental duration and agreed insurance conditions. The vehicle will not necessarily be released if the required deposit or payment guarantee has not been provided.
Drivers and documents
How old must I be to rent a car?
Our standard minimum age requirement is 23 years. Exceptions may be considered by prior agreement with Narvik Rent a Car. All drivers must hold a valid driving licence and meet the requirements specified in the rental agreement. Certain vehicle categories may have additional age requirements.
How long must I have held my driving licence?
Drivers must normally have held a valid driving licence for at least one year. The licence must be valid for the vehicle category being rented.
What documents do I need to collect the vehicle?
All drivers must present:
- Original, valid driving licence.
- Valid passport or national identification document.
- Additional identification or documentation if requested.
- International Driving Permit (IDP), where required. We reserve the right to refuse vehicle collection if the required documents cannot be presented or verified.
Do I need an International Driving Permit?
Drivers holding licences issued outside the EU/EEA may be required to present an International Driving Permit together with their original driving licence. An International Driving Permit is a supplementary document and does not replace the original driving licence. Requirements depend on the country that issued the licence and applicable regulations.
Can someone else drive my rental car?
Only drivers approved and registered in the rental agreement are permitted to drive the vehicle. Allowing an unauthorised person to drive is a breach of the rental agreement and may affect insurance coverage. The main renter remains responsible for ensuring that all drivers are properly registered.
How can I add an additional driver?
Additional drivers must be approved before driving the vehicle. The additional driver must:
- Be present when the additional driver is registered, unless otherwise agreed.
- Present an original valid driving licence.
- Provide the required identification and contact details.
- Meet the same applicable age and driving licence requirements.
- Sign or otherwise accept the relevant rental documentation. Additional driver charges may apply. For certain vehicles, including vans, an additional driver fee of NOK 1,950 for the entire rental period may apply where confirmed. The applicable price will be confirmed before approval.
Can I collect the vehicle on behalf of another person?
Normally, no. The main renter must be present to present the required documents, complete the rental agreement and accept responsibility for the vehicle. Any exception must be approved by Narvik Rent a Car in advance.
Collection and pickup
Where can I collect my rental car?
Narvik Rent a Car provides agreed pick-up arrangements at locations including:
- Harstad/Narvik Airport, Evenes.

How do I collect my vehicle at Evenes Airport?
Your pick-up instructions will be sent before arrival. For airport self-pick-up, you will receive information about the agreed parking area and key collection procedure. The renter is responsible for paying any applicable parking charge before leaving the parking area. Please follow the instructions provided by our staff.
What should I check before driving away?
Before leaving the pick-up location, inspect the vehicle carefully. Check:
- Exterior bodywork and paintwork.
- Windscreen and other windows.
- Tyres and wheels.
- Mirrors and lights.
- Interior, seats and dashboard.
- Fuel level.
- Existing damage.
- Vehicle equipment and accessories. Take photographs or videos of the vehicle from all sides. Any damage or defects not listed in the vehicle condition report must be reported to us before departure. By collecting and using the vehicle, you acknowledge the documented vehicle condition, subject to any additional damage reported before departure.
What happens if the vehicle has existing damage?
All known damage should be recorded in the vehicle condition report. Existing damage will not be charged to the renter as new damage, provided it has been properly documented. If you discover damage that is not recorded, contact us immediately and provide photographs.
Can I refuse the vehicle if I am not satisfied with its condition?
If you believe the vehicle is unsafe, unsuitable or materially different from the agreed category, contact us before driving away. We will assess the situation and, where possible, offer an appropriate alternative. Do not drive a vehicle that you believe is unsafe.
During the rental
Can I drive the rental car anywhere in Norway?
Yes, subject to the rental agreement, vehicle restrictions and applicable road regulations. The renter is responsible for checking road conditions and ensuring that the vehicle is suitable for the intended journey. Some roads, mountain routes and seasonal conditions may be unsuitable for certain vehicles.
Can I drive the rental car outside Norway?
Driving outside Norway requires prior written approval from Narvik Rent a Car. You must inform us of:
- Destination country.
- Planned travel dates.
- Intended route, if requested. Cross-border travel without written approval is not permitted. Additional insurance or documentation requirements may apply.
Is there a mileage limit?
Our standard rental price includes an average allowance of 200 kilometres per rental day, unless otherwise stated in your booking confirmation or rental agreement. Additional kilometres are charged at NOK 4 per kilometre unless another rate has been agreed in writing. The total mileage allowance and any additional charges will be specified in the rental agreement. An unlimited mileage option may be purchased when available; your booking confirmation and rental agreement specify what applies.
Can I extend my rental period?
Yes, subject to availability and prior approval. Contact us before the original return time if you need to keep the vehicle longer. An extension is only confirmed when approved by Narvik Rent a Car. Continuing to use the vehicle without an approved extension may constitute a breach of the rental agreement.
Can I return the vehicle earlier than agreed?
Yes, but please inform us in advance. Early return does not automatically entitle the renter to a refund for unused rental days. Any refund depends on the applicable booking conditions and written agreement.
Can I take the rental vehicle on gravel roads?
The vehicle must be used responsibly and in accordance with its intended purpose. Particular care is required on gravel roads, mountain roads, construction roads and other difficult surfaces. Damage caused by careless driving, unsuitable road use or prohibited driving conditions may be the renter's responsibility under the rental agreement and applicable insurance terms.
Can I use the vehicle for commercial purposes?
The vehicle may only be used for the purpose agreed at the time of booking. Commercial transport, delivery services, paid passenger transport, competitions, off-road driving or other specialised use require prior approval.
Can I smoke in the rental car?
No. Smoking and vaping are prohibited in all our rental vehicles. Special cleaning and restoration charges may apply if smoking or vaping has occurred.
Can I bring pets in the rental car?
Pets are only permitted with prior approval. The renter is responsible for ensuring that animals are properly secured and that the vehicle is returned clean and free from excessive hair, dirt and odours. Additional cleaning charges may apply where necessary.
Can I transport more passengers than the vehicle's seating capacity?
No. The number of passengers must never exceed the vehicle's registered seating capacity. All passengers must use the appropriate seat belts. The renter is responsible for ensuring that children use legally required child safety equipment.
Who is responsible for parking, tolls and traffic fines?
The renter is responsible for tolls, parking fees, traffic fines and other charges arising during the rental period. This includes charges received after the vehicle has been returned but relating to the rental period. An administration fee may apply when Narvik Rent a Car must identify the renter, process or forward such charges. The renter remains responsible for complying with all applicable traffic and parking regulations.
Insurance and damage
What insurance is included in the rental price?
The insurance products included in your rental depend on the selected booking rate and rental agreement. Your agreement will specify the applicable insurance coverage and any excess. Please check the insurance section before signing the contract.
What is an insurance excess?
An insurance excess is the amount the renter may have to pay towards a covered damage or theft claim. The applicable excess depends on the vehicle and selected insurance package. Your rental agreement specifies the amount applicable to your rental.
Can I reduce my insurance excess?
Additional insurance or excess-reduction options may be available. Please ask us before collecting the vehicle. Any additional protection must be expressly included in the rental agreement.
What should I do if I have an accident?

Do not admit liability or make agreements on behalf of the company. All accidents and damage must be reported immediately.
What should I do if the vehicle breaks down?
Contact Narvik Rent a Car immediately if you experience mechanical problems, warning lights, unusual noises or other technical issues. Stop driving if continuing could cause additional damage or create a safety risk. Do not arrange repairs or replacement parts without our prior approval, except where immediate action is necessary to prevent danger or further damage.
Can I arrange repairs myself?
Repairs require prior approval from Narvik Rent a Car, except where immediate action is necessary to prevent danger or further damage. We will advise where the vehicle should be inspected or repaired. Unauthorised repairs may not be reimbursed.
What happens if the vehicle gets a flat tyre?
Stop in a safe location and contact us. Provide photographs of the damaged tyre and the vehicle's location. Do not continue driving on a flat or seriously damaged tyre. The renter may be responsible for tyre damage caused by road hazards, impacts, incorrect tyre pressure or negligent use, depending on the circumstances and insurance terms.
What happens if the windscreen gets damaged?
Report windscreen damage immediately. Take photographs and provide the location and circumstances. The renter's financial responsibility depends on the insurance coverage and excess specified in the rental agreement.
What happens if the vehicle is stolen or vandalised?
Contact the police immediately and obtain a police report. Notify Narvik Rent a Car without delay. All keys, documents and relevant information must be provided to the company. Failure to follow reporting requirements may affect insurance coverage and the renter's liability.
What happens if I damage the vehicle?
Any damage occurring during the rental period must be reported immediately. The renter must cooperate with the company's investigation and provide accurate information. Depending on the circumstances, the renter may be responsible for:
- The applicable insurance excess.
- Damage not covered by insurance.
- Missing or damaged accessories.
- Additional recovery or towing costs where applicable.
- Other documented costs recoverable under the rental agreement and applicable law. Each damage incident is assessed individually.
Returning the vehicle
Where must I return the vehicle?
The vehicle must be returned to the location specified in the rental agreement or separately agreed in writing. For airport rentals at Evenes, the designated Low Cost Parking 24 area may be the return location, subject to your booking arrangements. Alternative return locations are not permitted without prior written approval.
Can I return the vehicle without meeting a company representative?
A vehicle should normally be handed over directly to a Narvik Rent a Car representative. Unattended returns are not automatically accepted. If you have received prior approval for an unattended return, you must:
- Contact us and confirm the exact parking location.
- Send photographs of the entire vehicle.
- Photograph the dashboard and mileage.
- Photograph the fuel level.
- Report any new damage.
- Return all keys and accessories as instructed. The renter remains responsible for the vehicle until the return has been completed in accordance with the agreed procedure.
What fuel level should the vehicle have when returned?

- Personal belongings.

What happens if I return the vehicle late?
The vehicle must be returned at the agreed date, time and location. If you anticipate a delay, contact us immediately. An unauthorised late return may result in additional rental charges, calculated according to the applicable rental agreement.

The renter must report any damage that occurred during the rental period. The company may need to conduct a final inspection after return, including checking areas that cannot reasonably be inspected immediately.
